EFFJAY PROJEKTS Visits Bushwick

Gallery artist, Melissa Dorn Richards and I, planned a visit to Brooklyn to visit art galleries, art museums and hopefully meet some artists. Not knowing exactly where to go led us into a walking spree into Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, Greenpoint, Prospect Heights, Williamsburg and finally into Bushwick.

Do you remember when you were in grade school on how easy it was to make a friend, but you could not pin point exactly how it all happened? Well, today I had the opportunity to meet Rob de Oude, artist living/working in Bushwick, NY. We did not meet in elementary school (if that is what you were wondering). Not knowing exactly how one thing led to another, we were connected via good ol’ facebook and of course, some mutual fb friends.

Rob pointed some interesting things about the art scene in NY. Not many galleries are open in August (good to know for the future), the art world is smaller than you think (we both know Anna Kunz), Bushwick Open Studios happens on the first weekend in June (got it on my calendar), and it is important to support one another whether you are an artist or gallery owner. Building a support system is essential for any artistic community to survive. It was refreshing to hear this from someone who is very active in the NY art scene.

As we walked amongst the streets of Bushwick I got to know him a little better (actually to meet him for the first time), learn about Bushwick, about his art, his gallery Parallel Art Space that he co-owns, and his practice. (you can read about him here). Even though many art galleries were closed we were able to see a couple. He took us into NURTUREart, introduced us to one of the gallery owners of Regina Rex and gave us a private tour of his studio. He also pointed out the best place to eat pizza or as they say in New York – pie.
